What to write in a gratitude journal on a hard day

By the Acatability team · 18 October 2026 · 3 min read

Some days nothing feels good. That's normal. A gratitude list on a hard day isn't about pretending. It's about noticing one small thing that was okay.

You don't have to feel grateful

Just write it down. The feeling can come later, or not. Noticing is the habit.

15 small prompts

  1. Something warm I drank or ate.
  2. A message from someone.
  3. Something that went less badly than I feared.
  4. A sound I liked.
  5. The best 5 minutes of today.
  6. Something I'm glad is over.
  7. A small thing I did for myself.
  8. Someone who'd be glad to hear from me.
  9. Something soft: a blanket, a jumper, a pet.
  10. A thing I'm looking forward to, however tiny.
  11. Something that made me smile, even a bit.
  12. A place I felt okay today.
  13. Something I didn't have to do today.
  14. A song, show or book that kept me company.
  15. The fact that today is nearly done.

Keep it tiny

One item is enough. "Tea" is a full answer. Small and honest beats long and forced.

How Acatability helps

Each Acatability check-in has a space for a few good things, and the app reminds you: notice the good, even on rough days. Your pact can see your gratitude only if you choose to share it.
